Resumen: El presente artículo describe algunas de las labores de prevención y mitigación que se realizan en Costa Rica, enfocado en dos de los eventos hidrometeorológicos más recurrentes: los deslizamientos, que causan mayor cantidad de fallecidos y desaparecidos, y las inundaciones, que producen mayor impacto en la economía del país. Entre estas labores, se expone la importancia que tienen las proyecciones y los reportes del Instituto Meteorológico Nacional como instrumento de planificación. Además, se presentan acciones como la capacitación en el sector educación, gestión de sensibilización a municipios, fortalecimiento del área de evaluación técnica, implementación del Sistema Nacional de Alerta Temprana (SAT) y la inversión económica en el mejoramiento o construcción de infraestructura. Por último, se reflexiona sobre la incorporación de la cultura de la prevención en el país

This article describes some of the prevention and mitigation works done in Costa Rica, focused in two new more recurrent hydrometeorological events: landslides, that cause more casualties and missing persons, and floods that produce a major impact on the country´s economy. These works include the importance of projections and reports from National Meteorological Institute as a planning tool. Also, it includes actions such as training in the educational sector, sensitization of municipalities, strengthening of the technical evaluation area, implementation of the National System for Early Alert (Sistema Nacional de Alerta Temprana - SAT) and the economic investment in infrastructure improving or construction. Lastly, it reflects about the incorporation of the prevention culture in the country
