Resumen: Las cuencas hidrográficas cumplen un papel trascendental en el desarrollo de las comunidades ya que sus actividades socio-productivas muchas veces están sujetas a ellas. El artículo analiza la importancia de realizar un adecuado manejo de las cuencas, el uso racional de sus recursos y la planificación del desarrollo de las comunidades a su alrededor, con el fin de disminuir la vulnerabilidad a eventos generadores de desastres. Propone un manejo integral de las cuencas hidrográficas como unidad territorial y enumera una serie de consideraciones al respecto. Explica algunos de los artículos de la Ley Forestal y el Pago de Servicios Ambientales relacionado con el tema. Presenta la experiencia de cuatro proyectos de conservación y recuperación de cuencas las cuales han sido exitosas y finalmente, describe la perspectiva país y las conclusiones del artículo

Watersheds are transcendental in the development of communities since most of the time socio-productive activities are related to them. The article analyses the importance of properly managing the watersheds, rationally using their resources and planning the development of the communities around them to diminish vulnerability to the events generated by disasters. It proposes an integral management of watersheds as territorial units and enumerates a series of considerations in this regard. It explains some of the articles of the Forest Law and Environmental Services Payment related to the topic. It presents the experience of four conservation and basins recovery projects which have been successful and finally it describes the country perspectives and the article conclusions
