Resumen:Se hizo un reconocimiento de las áreas inundables de cantón La Unión y de los sitios afectados por los incidentes de los últimos años, el cual incluye un análisis del potencial de inundación del Río Chiquito, una descripción de los incidentes recientes y las acciones realizadas para reducir el riesgo. En la zona de estudio hay planicies de inundación a lo largo de los ríos y quebradas ocupadas por asentamientos humanos, situación que no ha sido adecuadamente manejada debido a la carencia de estudios completos, detallados y más generales. El objetivo del trabajo es contribuir con el manejo del riesgo del cantón. La cartografía se realizó con datos del Sistema Nacional de Información Territorial (SNIT) y la descripción de los eventos recientes con información escrita en informes técnicos y notas de prensa. La vulnerabilidad física a las inundaciones se comprobó durante visitas al campo. La inundación es una de las amenazas más importantes del cantón La Unión y los sitios más afectados hasta la fecha son, San Diego, Río Azul, Concepción, y Tres Ríos.

A recognition of the floodplain areas of La Unión canton and sites affected by the incidents of recent years was made, which includes an analysis of the flood potential of the Río Chiquito river, a description of recent incidents and the actions taken to reduce the risk. In the study area there are flood plains along the rivers and streams occupied by human settlements, a situation that has not been adequately managed due to the lack of complete, detailed and more general studies. The objective of the work is to contribute to the risk management of the canton. The cartography was carried out with data from the National Territorial Information System (SNIT) and the description of recent events with information written in technical reports and press releases. Physical vulnerability to flooding was verified during field visits. The flood is one of the most important hazards of La Unión canton and the most affected sites to date are San Diego, Río Azul, Concepción, and Tres Ríos.
